ELMHURST, Ill. – Senior Sami Spenner added to her remarkable list of superlatives on Wednesday when she was named the Summit League's outdoor track and field athlete of the year.
Spenner's honors mark the first time one student-athlete has collected both honors in league history since 2010 when both Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year honors were awarded.
In two years of Summit League competition, the Columbus, Neb. native also was named Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2013 and 2014.
Spenner, the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, was one of only two women in NCAA competition to surpass 6,000 points in the heptathlon this season with a total of 6,003. She was named the Summit's Field Championship MVP for the second-straight year after defending her trio of titles (heptathlon, long jump, triple jump) with league records in the heptathlon (5,507) and triple jump (41'11.25”/12.78m), scoring 51 individual points at The Summit League Championships. She finished in the top-four of all seven heptathlon events at the championship including winning the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, 200 meters and long jump, en route to a league record score of 5,507 points.
On the track, Spenner finished second in the 100 meters (11.81) and third in the 200 meters (23.84) at the Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She was also a member of UNO's second-place 4x400-meter relay team and third-place 4x100-meter relay team at the league meet.
Spenner finished the regular season ranked in the league's top-three in eight events, four field and four track, including first in the long jump, triple jump and heptathlon. She set school records in four events (triple jump, heptathlon, 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles) this season and was also named to the Academic All-League team for the second consecutive year.
Spenner will be representing the Mavericks this weekend at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championship in Sacramento, Calif. She will compete in the heptathlon on Friday and Saturday, June 27-28. Spenner qualified fourth and is the second-highest qualifying collegiate athlete in the event.
