Spenner Named Regional Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Omaha senior Sami Spenner has been named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The award is for the outdoor season and marks the second such award for Spenner this season. She also was named regional field athlete of the year for the indoor season.
Spenner set seven school records during the 2013-14 season including the American collegiate record in the pentathlon while earning Summit All-League honors as a six-time champion, indoors and outdoors. She was the Summit Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year while also garnering Summit Field Championship MVP honors both indoors and outdoors. Spenner also has been Summit Academic All-League and a member of the Commissioner's List. She received five Summit League Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards, was twice the Summit's Athlete of the Month and was twice named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week.
In competition, Spenner reached new milestones seemingly every week. She is the holder of eight school records and was ranked first in seven events and in the top six in eight other events, indoors and outdoors, in the Summit League this past season. She had the top pentathlon mark in the NCAA and was ranked second in the heptathlon in advance of the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Spenner will represent UNO at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championship on June 26-29 in Sacramento, Calif.
