Spenner, Mavs Take Home Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Sami Spenner was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic selection, one of 727 women to earn the honor nationwide.
For the third consecutive year during their Division I reclassification, the Mavericks also were named an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA for earning a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or higher. The Mavericks posted a 3.47 GPA in 2013-14.
Spenner had a 3.83 GPA in exercise science/physical therapy, graduating this spring. Her senior season was beyond compare in the annals of Omaha track & field. She was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Spenner was the Summit League's indoor field athlete of the year and the field athlete MVP for the league championship and also was named all-league. She won the pentathlon, 60 meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump to account for 50 of Nebraska Omaha's 109 team points at the Summit indoor championship. She was twice named the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week for the indoor season and earned the Summit's Field Athlete of the Week three times.
Outdoors, Spenner became the first athlete to win both the Summit League's track athlete and field athlete of the year awards and was again named all-league. She was the Summit League's field championship MVP, winning the heptathlon with a league record score of 5,507. She also won the triple jump and the long jump and placed second in the 100 meters, third in the 200 meters and high jump and eighth in the javelin to account for 51 of Omaha's 116 team points. She earned two more Summit League athlete of the week honors.
Spenner finished her college career with the Summit League records for both the pentathlon and heptathlon.
In addition to her athletic exploits, she also was named to the Summit League's Academic All-League Team as well as earning academic all-league and Commissioner's List honors.
For the 2013-14 season indoors, she had the top Summit League marks in the 60 meter hurdles, long jump, triple jump and pentathlon and ranked in the top six in the 60 meters (2), 200 meters (3), high jump (3) and 800 meters (6). Outdoors, she had the league's top marks in the long jump, triple jump and heptathlon and ranked in the top six in the 100 meter hurdles (2), 100 meters (3), 200 meters (3), 400 meters (3), high jump (3), 800 meters (6) and javelin (6).
Spenner concluded her collegiate career as the owner of eight school records for both indoor and outdoor track, more than any other athlete in school history. Indoors, she owns the American collegiate record in the pentathlon with a score of 4,498 and has school records in the 60 meter hurdles (8.52) and the long jump (6.34/20-09 ¾). Outdoors, she has school records in the 200 meters (23.54), 100 meter hurdles (13.91), long jump (6.32/20-09), triple jump (12.78/41-11 ¼) and the heptathlon (6,003).
As senior, she earned the school's senior career achievement award for four years of athletic, academic, and community service excellence. She also earned her second straight athlete of the year award. In addition, she was named the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame's Sportswoman of the Year.
