Spenner Second, U.S. Women Win Thorpe Cup

MARBURG, Germany – Sami Spenner finished second overall, and the United States took first place in the annual Thorpe Cup competition with Germany. The meet, which featured seven heptathletes from each country, was held on July 26-27.
Spenner, competing in the Thorpe Cup for the second straight year, posted a score of 5,876, behind only teammate Barbara Nwaba who was the overall winner with 6,205 points. Erica Bougard of the U.S. was third with 5,873. The team scores are determined by the top three finishers for each team.
The U.S. won with 17,954 points. Germany had 17,206.
On the first day, Spenner ran 14.28 in the 100 meter hurdles and had a mark of 5-7 ¼ in the high jump. She followed that with a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 40-09 ¾ and concluded with a time of 23.87 in the 200 meters, best in the field.
The following day, she had a leap of 20-03 in the long jump and threw 119-00 in the javelin. In the final event of the meet, she ran a time of 2:15.25 in the 800 meters.
