This Week
The Omaha women's golf team faces a quick turnaround this week, traveling to the WIU Autumn Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13-14, just four days after competing at Nebraska. The 36-hole event begins with a shotgun start on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course in Macomb, Ill.
The men's team will host its only event of the season, the UNO Invitational, on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16 at ArborLinks in Nebraska City. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. each day.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his fourth year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Season Openers
Karl Krieser led the Omaha men's golf team to an 11th-place finish at the Derek Dolenc Invitational at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sept. 8-9. The Mavericks finished with a team score of 909 for the 54-hole event.
Krieser played well over the final 36 holes of the event. After opening with a 78 in the first round, he came back with a 71 in round two before closing with a 73 that put him at 222, good for a tie for 16th overall.
Alex Holtan, who led the Mavs through the first two rounds, shot 227, good for a tie for 38th. Brandon Sletmoen was third for UNO and tied for 47th overall in the field of 88 golfers with a score of 229. Freshmen Phillip Baumberger and Ryan Mayer finished at 231 (t-56th) and 240 (t-79th) respectively.
Lucas Gervais finished at 234, and Caleb Haight was 240. Both were playing as individuals.
The women's team finished in ninth place in the Chip-N Club Invitational on Tuesday, their first event of the season. The Mavericks posted a three-round team score of 951 at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course including a final round tally of 312, their lowest of the tournament.
Freshman Megan Vetrovsky led the Mavericks in scoring with a three-round total of 229 to tie for 19th overall.
Sophie Peters was second for the Mavs and tied for 33rd with a score of 234. Katie Kesti was third for UNO, finishing at 238 to tie for 45th in the 62-player tournament.
Makenna Kroeker was 57th with a score of 250, and freshman Alexa Ruwe shot 291, good for 60th place.
Home Event
The UNO Invitational hosted by the men's team is its only home event of the year and marks its second event at ArborLinks in Nebraska City in as many years. Last season, the Mavericks had their best team finish of the season at the event, second place, while shooting a team score of 909 over 54 holes. Karl Krieser led the Mavericks and finished in a tie for second place with a score of 223 that included a career best-tying round of 70 in round two.
This year's event will feature 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Participating teams include South Dakota, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Creighton, Nicholls State, Weber State, Oral Roberts, Iowa Western and Indian Hills CC. Live scoring will be available at Birdiefire.com.
