Mavericks Stay In-State at Woody Greeno

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team returns to action after a week off when it competes in the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20. The meet begins at 10 a.m. at Pioneers Park in Lincoln, Neb.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 33rd season of women's cross country in 2014. It is also the final year of their four-year reclassification to Division I. They will eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition beginning in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his second season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fifth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, Bierbaum led the Mavericks to a sixth-place finish in the Summit League Championship. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Time Out
For the second straight week, Ashley Kildow led the Omaha cross country team in a night event as the Mavericks finished seventh at the Augustana Twilight Invitational on Sept. 5. The Mavericks finished with 152 points in the field of 22 schools.
Kildow ran a time of 16:50.90 over the rare three-mile course at Yankton Trails Park to finish ninth overall.
Kristin Rogers was second for the Mavs and 28th overall with a time of 17:16.45, just ahead of freshman teammate Alyssa Averhoff who scored again for the Mavs with a time of 17:17.66, good for 30th place.
Kristen Carmichael was fourth for UNO with a time of 17:37.73, good for 49th place. Catherine Davison completed the scoring for the Mavericks with a time of 17:41.82 which put her 52nd in the field of 266 runners.
Where They Rank
Two Mavericks rank in the top 15 in the Summit League for 5K times after two meets this season. Kildow ranks fifth with her time of 18:38.87 at Memphis on Aug. 30 while Rogers is 14th with her time of 19:37.50 at the same meet.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuke has the league's top 5K time at 18:09.75.
The Newcomers
Three true freshman, all from outside Nebraska, joined the Mavericks this season. Alyssa Averhoff comes to Omaha from Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track at Kennedy High School. She scored for the Mavericks in her first collegiate meet, coming in third on the team.
Katie Bostrom is a native of Fargo, N.D. where she was an all-state performer for three years at Fargo South High School. Kayla Sabotin was a four-year qualifier for the state cross country championship while running for Waukee High School in West Des Moines, Iowa.
In addition, sophomore Alyssa Thavenet, who participated in track & field last season, was added to the team following the first meet of the year.

The Mavericks have another week off before returning to action at the SDSU Classic hosted by Summit League member South Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 4. The meet begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings, S.D.
