This Week
The Omaha men's and women's golf teams will both head north to Dakota Dunes, S.D. for the South Dakota Coyote Classic hosted by Summit League member South Dakota on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 29-30. The 54-hole event for each team will begin at 9 a.m. each day from the Dakota Dunes Country Club.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.

Karl Krieser shot a new school record score for 54 holes as the Omaha men's golf team tied for first in their own tournament, the UNO Invitational, before losing the ensuing sudden death playoff to Weber State on Sept. 16 at ArborLinks.
The two schools tied with scores of 894 in the 54-hole event. Weber State won the one-hole playoff by a best four-of-five team score of even versus the Mavericks' score of +3. Summit League member Oral Roberts was third at 896.
In addition to the school record, Krieser set a new career best with a 54-hole total of 215 to lead the Mavericks in scoring and finish second overall. He became the first Maverick to finish a tournament under par (-1).
Brandon Sletmoen and Alex Holtan finished tied for second in team scoring and tied for 16th overall with three-round totals of 228.
Phillip Baumberger was fourth for UNO with a total score of 229 to finish in a tie for 24th overall. Taylor Sidzyik completed the scoring for the Mavs with a total of 235, good for a tie for 41st.
Caleb Haight (237/T-46), Ryan Mayer (239/T-49), Lucas Gervais (243/T-53) and Ryan Milks (256/65) all played as individuals.
The Women Visit Western
The Omaha women's golf team took third place at the WIU Autumn Invitational on Sept 14, their most recent tournament. The Mavericks shot a team score of 644 for the 36-hole tournament, just three shots behind second-place Indiana State. Host Western Illinois won the event with a score of 621.
Katie Kesti led the Mavericks in scoring with a 36-hole total of 155 to finish third overall. She was one stroke ahead of teammate Megan Vetrovsky who finished at 156, good for a tie for fourth.
Sophie Peters was third for the Mavericks and tied for 12th overall. She shot a score of 164, and Makenna Kroeker concluded the tournament at 174, good for a tie for 25th. Katelyn Strudthoff shot a score of 180, fifth for the Mavs and in a tie for 31st overall.
Alexa Ruwe, playing as an individual, also had a score of 180 including an 89 in round two.
Up Next
Following action this week, the men's team will be off until Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11 at the Nebraska Intercollegiate hosted by the Nebraska Golf Association in Norfolk, Neb. The following week, the women's team will be at the MSU/Payne Steward Memorial hosted by Missouri State on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 13-14 in Springfield, Mo.
