Mavericks Back In The Twilight at Augustana

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team will run in its second straight nighttime meet to open the season when it takes part in the Augustana Twilight on Friday, Sept. 5 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The meet begins at 8 p.m. at Yankton Trails Park.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 33rd season of women's cross country in 2014. It is also the final year of their four-year reclassification to Division I. They will eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition beginning in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his second season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fifth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, Bierbaum led the Mavericks to a sixth-place finish in the Summit League Championship. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Week in Memphis
The Omaha cross country team opened its season under the lights at the Memphis Twilight Classic on Saturday night.
Senior Ashley Kildow was the Mavericks' top finisher, coming in 12th in the field of 141 runners. The Mavs finished sixth overall out of 14 schools with 160 points.
Mississippi State won the event with a team score of 36 followed by Arkansas State (63) and Mississippi (65).
Kildow ran a time of 18:38.87 over the 5K course. Teammates Kristin Rogers (19:37.50), Alyssa Averhoff (19:47.16) and Catherine Davison (19:47.89) finished 40-41-42. For Averhoff, a freshman, it was her first collegiate meet.
Karo Garcia rounded out the scoring for the Mavericks, coming in 50th in a time of 20:10.80.
Where They Rank
Two Mavericks rank in the top 15 in the Summit League for 5K times after the first meets of the season. Kildow ranks fifth with her time of 18:38.87 at Memphis last week while Kristin Rogers is 14th with her time of 19:37.50.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuke has the league's top 5K time at 18:09.75.
The Newcomers
Three true freshman, all from outside Nebraska, joined the Mavericks this season. Alyssa Averhoff comes to Omaha from Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track at Kennedy High School. She scored for the Mavericks in her first collegiate meet, coming in third on the team. Katie Bostrom is a native of Fargo, N.D. where she was an all-state performer for three years at Fargo South High School. Kayla Sabotin was a four-year qualifier for the state cross country championship while running for Waukee High School in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Up Next
The Mavericks have a week off before returning to action in-state at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20. The meet begins at 10 a.m. at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.
