Mavericks To Compete In NCAA Midwest Regional

OMAHA, Neb. – For the first time in five years, the Omaha cross country team will take part in NCAA competition. The Mavericks head to Lawrence, Kan. on Friday for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.
The meet, hosted by Kansas, will be run at Rim Rock Farm with the women's race beginning at noon. This is Omaha first NCAA appearance as a Division I member following the completion of their four-year reclassification.
The Mavericks last competed on Oct. 31 when they came in fifth at the Summit League Championship in Brookings, S.D. They finished with 155 points for the championship.
Karo Garcia led the Mavericks for the fifth time in six races this season, running a time of 23:25.90 to finish 27th overall over the 6K course at the Edgebrook Golf Course.
Perla Gutierrez was second for the Mavericks and 30th in the 62-person race with a time of 23:43.19, just ahead of teammate Rosie Gensichen who was 32nd in a time of 23:46.33.
Alyssa Averhoff was fourth for the Mavericks and 37th overall at 24:00.90, and Avery Schmidt completed the scoring in 40th place with a time of 24:09.07.
Also running for the Mavericks in the Summit Championship were Shae Spady (52nd/25:31.89), Alyssa Thavenet (53rd/25:38.12) and Lauren Houston (56th/26:16.05).
