Mavericks Continue Trip at Northern Arizona

This Week
The Omaha women's golf team will resume its spring season-opening trip to Arizona this weekend when it plays in the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28 in Sedona, Ariz. Play begins at 1 p.m. CT on Friday and at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday at the Oakcreek Country Club. The Omaha men's golf team is off.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Spring Opener- Men Finish Sixth at Nicholls State
The Omaha men's golf team opened the spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls State on Feb. 24. The Mavericks finished with a 54-hole team score of 950 in the two-day, eight-team event at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild. South Dakota and Incarnate Word tied for the lead with matching scores of 920 and were declared co-champions.
Karl Krieser led the Mavericks with a three-round score of 231. He finished in a three-way tie for eighth in the field of 45 golfers. It marked the fourth time in five team tournaments that he has led the Mavs in scoring.
Phillip Baumberger and Brandon Sletmoen tied for second for the Mavs and finished in a tie for 26th with scores of 241. Taylor Sidzyik was fourth for UNO with a score of 243 that put him in a tie for 32nd overall. Alex Holtan completed the scoring for UNO with a score of 246 that put him 38th overall.
Spring Opener - Women Are 19th at Grand Canyon
The women's golf team finished 19th at the GCU Invitational on Feb. 25. The Mavericks finished with a 54-hole team score of 970. California Riverside finished a wire-to-wire win with a score of 895.
Sophie Peters led the Mavericks in scoring, the second time she's done so this season. She carded a score of 227 to finish in a tie for 15th overall. The score marked her lowest 54-hole total this year.
Katie Kesti was second for the Mavericks and tied for 71st overall with a three-day total of 240. Megan Vetrovsky posted a score of 252, good for a tie for 97th in the huge field of 120 golfers. She finished one stroke ahead of teammate Makenna Kroeker who shot 253 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 99th.
Alexa Ruwe finished the scoring for the Mavericks with three-round total of 267.
Rankings
Krieser is in a tie for 17th in the Summit League for scoring average at 74.8 through 15 rounds this season. He is the only Maverick ranked in the top 20. Denver's Petter Mikalsen leads the league with an average of 70.8 in 16 rounds.
As a team, the Maverick men rank sixth out of nine schools with a team 18-hole stroke average of 304.4.
On the women's side, Sophie Peters is just outside the top 20 in the league with a stroke average of 79.3 in 16 rounds. Denver's Mariell Bruun leads the Summit League with a stroke average of 71.1 in 14 rounds
As a team, the Mavs are eighth in the Summit with an 18-hole average of 323.6 in 16 rounds.

The men's team will take part in the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, March 9-10. The women resume play at the SUU Thunderbird Golf Invitational at Southern Utah on March 12-13.
