Maverick Awards Banquet Features Largest Crowd Yet

OMAHA, Neb. – Seniors Jenna Foiles and Felipe da Silva won Omaha Athletics' career achievement awards to cap the Maverick Awards Banquet, a night when UNO honors its own.
More than 600 people, the largest gathering for the sixth annual event, turned out at the Embassy Suites to see 11 awards handed out.
Foiles, from the UNO swimming & diving team, earned the Connie Claussen Senior Career Achievement Award recognizing the outstanding career athletic, academic and community service achievement of a female student-athlete. The award is sponsored by the Leland and Dorothy Olson Foundation.
Da Silva from the UNO men's soccer team won the Don Leahy Senior Career Achievement Award which recognizes a male athlete who has had a similarly sterling career at UNO. Da Silva became the first student-athlete other than a basketball or hockey player to win the award. The Leahy Award is sponsored by the Sixth Mav Club.
Junior Haley Shelton of the women's soccer team earned the ACE Award, given to the student-athlete who completes his/her career with a career 4.0 grade-point average. The award stands for Academic Career Achievement and is sponsored by the Woodhouse Auto Group. It's the second straight year the award has been handed out, both times to a women's soccer player.
Sophomore Mikaela Shaw earned the Marian Ivers Female Athlete of the Year Award solely for athletic achievement this season. Shaw won the Newcomer of the Year Award as a freshman. Ryan Massa was named the Male Athlete of the Year, sponsored by the Mav Board, for his record-setting season in goal for the UNO hockey team.
Junior Kelley Wollak of the volleyball team earned the Bob Kruger Commitment Award for outstanding community service. Kat Barrow of the softball team earned the Dr. John Langan Phoenix Award for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. The award is sponsored by Aksarben Cinema.
Omaha track & field athlete Stephanie Ahrens was named the Female Newcomer of the Year while Tyler Vesel of the hockey team was the Male Newcomer of the Year. Both awards are sponsored by Control Services.
Diane Banderas of the volleyball team and Justin Parizek of the hockey team earned the Maverick Muscle Awards, sponsored by Pharmaceutical Technologies Inc., which recognizes consistent achievement and motivation in the weight room.
Those in attendance also heard from Chancellor John Christensen and Vice Chancellor of Athletics Trev Alberts and watched a video of some of the outstanding highlights from Omaha Athletics this season. The event was hosted by Mike'l Severe of the Omaha World-Herald.
