Mavericks Vie For Summit Championship This Week

The Omaha men's golf team concludes its season by competing in the Summit League Championship on Friday through Sunday, May 1-3. Play will begin at 10 a.m. CT each day at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, Calif. Last season, the Mavericks tied with Western Illinois for seventh in the league championship played in Keller, Texas.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
LAST EVENT - Mavericks Take Fifth at Western Illinois
Alex Holtan shot a final round score of 74 to lead the Omaha men's golf team to fifth place at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational at Western Illinois on Tuesday. The Mavericks finished with a 54-hole team score of 918.
Holtan led the Mavericks in scoring for the first time this season. He finished with a three-round total of 229 to finish 12th overall.
Taylor Sidzyik was two strokes behind at 231 to tie for 17th.
Karl Krieser, Caleb Haight and Phillip Baumberger all tied for third for the Mavericks and tied for 25th overall with scores of 234.
Lucas Gervais, playing as an individual, finished at 237, good for 35th place overall.
LAST EVENT - Women Earn Sixth at Summit League Championship
The Omaha women's golf team exceeded pre-season expectations with a sixth-place finish at the Summit League Championship on April 22.
The Mavericks, who had been picked last in the Summit's preseason coaches' poll, posted a 54-hole score of 985 on another cold and windy day at the Bayonet Golf Course. Denver repeated as Summit Champions with a score of 926, ahead of Oral Roberts at 944. South Dakota State finished third at 948.
Sophie Peters finished as UNO's leading scorer in her final round as a Maverick with a total of 239. That was good for 12th place.
Katie Kesti was second for the Mavericks and 13th overall with a score of 240.
Megan Vetrovsky carded a score of 247, good for a tie for 22nd in the 45-player field.
Makenna Kroeker tied for 41st overall after shooting a three-round total of 264. Alexa Ruwe tied her career best by shooting a round of 84 in the final round to finish at 270.
Rankings
Krieser is 13th in the Summit League for scoring average at 74.9 through 29 rounds this season. He is the only Maverick ranked in the top 20. Denver's Petter Mikalsen leads the league with an average of 70.6 in 28 rounds.
As a team, the Maverick men rank sixth out of nine schools with a team 18-hole stroke average of 304.2.
In the final women's rankings, Sophie Peters is just outside the top 20 in the league with a stroke average of 79.2 in 28 rounds this season. Alejandra Acosta of Oral Roberts led the Summit League with a stroke average of 74.7 in 28 rounds
As a team, the Mavs also are sixth in the Summit with an 18-hole average of 323.4 in 28 rounds.
