Freshmen Help Mavs Hold Fourth at Summit

MACOMB, Ill. – The Omaha track & field team is in fourth place after the second day of competition at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Friday.
The Mavericks have 20 points after the second day at Hanson Stadium at Western Illinois. Defending champion North Dakota State continues to lead with 152 points. South Dakota is second at 77, and South Dakota State is third with 42.
In the high jump, the Mavericks had three scorers led by freshman Stephanie Ahrens. She came in third with a jump of 5-07 ¼. Freshman Emily Everitt tied with North Dakota State's Ann Govig for fifth with a jump of 5-05 ¼. Taryn Derickson tied with South Dakota's Colette Christensen for seventh with a mark of 5-03 ¼. In total, they accounted for 10 points.
Noni Henderson continued UNO's trend of freshman scorers. She was sixth and picked up three points in the long jump with a mark of 18-04, a new personal best.
Senior Amanda Alexander took sixth in the heptathlon, earning three points for the Mavericks with an event score of 3,536. In the final three events, she scored enough points to move from seventh to sixth place, overtaking Western Illinois' Darcy Arendt in the final event, the 800 meters.
In the long jump, Alexander posted a leap of 16-02, just one inch shorter than her personal best. In the javelin throw, she had the best mark of the eight competitors with a toss of 117-03. She finished with a time of 2:40.06 in the 800 meters, a little more than a second off her previous PR set at last year's outdoor championship.
Preliminaries were held in nearly all of the track events on Friday. Senior Katarina Zarudnaya qualified for the finals in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.69, third-best among the eight qualifiers and a season best.
Freshman Maddie Buller qualified for the finals in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.95, a personal best.
The final day of competition begins on Friday at 11 a.m. CT.
