Mavericks Open Season On Friday
Sep 3, 2015 | Cross Country
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team begins the 2015 season under the lights this week. The Mavericks will participate in the Augustana Twilight on Friday, Sept. 4. The meet begins at 8 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Mavericks, picked to finish fourth in the Summit League pre-season coaches poll, will be a relatively young group with just three seniors on their roster.
The Mavericks were fifth in the 2014 Summit championship and return three runners who competed in that meet including senior Perla Gutierrez, junior Karo Garcia and sophomore Alyssa Averhoff. All three scored in three meets for UNO last year with Gutierrez and Garcia picking up points in the Summit Championship. All three will be expected to lead the way as the Mavs feature five true or redshirt freshmen and three more sophomores.
Freshman Mads Nelson is among the newcomers who could contribute. She was an all-region performer for Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and was a national qualifier in track in the 3,000 meters. Freshman Lauren Houston is a product of Omaha Burke High School where she medaled in four events in track & field and was the 800 meter all-class champion as a senior. Another Omahan, Shae Spady, was a four-year letter winner in cross country and track & field at Millard West High School. She also ran for the Cornhusker Flyers track club where she was a 2,000 meter steeplechase specialist, winning the event at the USATF Regional Junior Olympics in 2014.
Following action in Sioux Falls, the Mavericks are back in action at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Lincoln.
