
Mavs Gear Up For the Summit League Indoor Championship

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track and field team will take part in the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 - 27, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Track and field events begin at 3 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, field events start at 11:30 a.m., and track events begin at 1 p.m.
Reclassification Complete
This year's indoor championship has a different implication for the Mavericks as it will mark the first in which athletes can qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship. During the last three years, Omaha competed in the Summit Championship but was not eligible for the NCAA championship.
Last Weekend
The Mavs competed in the Nebraska Tune-Up in Lincoln, Neb. last Friday to cap off the regular season.
Sophomore Stephanie Ahrens continued to shine in the high jump with a third place finish at 5-07. She also set a personal record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.93 seconds.
Junior Taryn Derickson placed in fourth in the high jump tying her season high with a leap of 5-05.
In the triple jump, freshman Taleah Williams and sophomore Noni Henderson recorded top 10 finishes. Williams placed fourth with a jump of 36-00 ¾ and Henderson finished in sixth with a leap of 35-05 ¼.
For the first time this season, Omaha sent out a distance medley team, and the Mavericks didn't disappoint. The team consisting of sophomore Kayla Sabotin, junior Alyssa Thavenet, freshman Lauren Houston and sophomore Alyssa Averhoff, finished with a time of 12:19.20 which was good for the eighth-best time in school history.
Ranking in the Summit
Ahrens holds the top spot in the high jump with a jump of 5-10. She achieved her top mark at the SDSU Classic on Feb. 12. Ahrens also ranks fifth in the Summit in the 60 meter hurdles with her time of 8.93 from the Nebraska Tune-Up.
Derickson has been pushing Ahrens in the high jump all season. Derickson ranks fifth in the Summit with a leap of 5-05 from the Nebraska Tune-Up.
Houston leads the Maverick runners in the Summit standings. She sits at second in the 800 meter with a time of 2:09.99 set at the SDSU Classic on Feb. 12.
NCAA Indoor Championship
Those Mavericks who do qualify for the NCAA Championship will travel to Birmingham, Ala. on March 11-12.
