Men's Golf Hosts UNO Invitational To Open Season

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's golf team begins the fall half of its season at its own UNO Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4. Play begins at 8 a.m. each day at ArborLinks in Nebraska City.
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. The Mavericks will be hosting the event with the women's golf team. This is the first time in the four-year history of the event that it has featured a men's and women's tournament. Live stats for the tournament will be available at OMavs.com.
Coaches
Seth Porter is in his sixth year as the head coach of the men's team. He also became the head coach of the women's team this summer following a stint as the interim head coach during the spring season. In July, Porter hired Easton Key as his assistant. Key comes to Omaha after a standout college career at Arkansas State where he later served as a graduate assistant for the men's program.
Who's Back, Who's Gone?
The Mavericks return five players from the 2015-16 season including seniors Ben Maskus and Mitch Ryan and sophomores Kobi Boe, Kevin Gordon and Sam Musch. Gordon was the Summit League Championship MVP and a member of the All-Tournament team during his freshman season, finishing as the top individual with a score of 216 and becoming UNO's first NCAA Regional qualifier.
Maskus and Ryan finished 1-2 in team scoring with Maskus shooting the team's low 54-hole score of the season, a school record 213 at the Desert Shootout in March. Maskus finished second for the Mavericks in the Summit Championship and tied for second overall to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. The Mavericks finished as runners up after being picked to finish seventh out of nine schools.
The Mavericks' only loss to graduation was Miles Russell who played in 22 rounds in eight events and was fourth in team scoring.
The Newcomers
Omaha welcomes four freshmen to the mix this season including Midwesterners Kelly Brown (Oberlin, Kan./Decatur Community) and Jonah Wright (Scottsbluff, Neb./Scottsbluff) as well as Swedish native Max Hellstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/Santa Margarita Catholic) who played high school golf in California and Canadian David Huxham (Montreal, Quebec/John Abbott) who played in the Men's Canadian Amateur Championship this summer.

The Mavericks will play in five tournaments in the fall with trips to SIUE, UMKC and Old Dominion also on the schedule. Following the UNO Invitational, they will take part in the John Dallio Memorial at DePaul on Sept. 19-20 in Chicago, Ill.
