Mavericks To Induct Three Into Hall

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Athletics announced that former student-athletes Cody Garcia, Tanis Hastmann Walch and Anja Puc will be the 2017 inductees into the UNO Athletics Hall of Fame.
"We have another trio of outstanding Mavericks for this year's induction including two national champions and a four-time conference champion," said Trev Alberts, Vice Chancellor of Athletics. "All three were All-Americans, making them some of the finest student-athletes to have played their respective sports both regionally and nationally.
"They represented UNO with great distinction during their time on campus, and all are most deserving of a place in our Hall of Fame."
The induction will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19 at the UNO Alumni Association's Night of Honor held at the Thompson Alumni Center on campus. The event will be part of UNO's Homecoming Weekend.
A four-time All-American and twice a National Champion, Garcia wrestled for the Mavericks from 2005-10. He won the national championship at 125 pounds in 2006 and following a redshirt year, he won another championship at 125 in 2008. Moving up to 133 pounds in 2009, he finished third nationally and was the runner up at that weight as a senior in 2010. A member of three national championship teams, Garcia finished his career fourth in school history with 147 career wins. His 48 wins earned during his senior season rank second all-time at UNO for single-season wins.
UNO's only All-American in women's golf, Hastmann Walch is one of the all-time scoring leaders with a career average of 80.07 during her career from 2001-2005. She was the individual medalist each year at the North Central Conference Championship, leading the Mavericks to two titles and a runner-up finish. She also was a four-time member of the All-NCC team and a member of the Academic All-NCC team in 2003. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba owns the school record for best 72-hole score at 314, a mark shot during the 2005 NCAA Division II National Championship when she finished 17th overall. It was one of two career NCAA Championship appearances.
Puc ran for the Omaha track & field team from 2007-2011 during which she was a three-time national champion and an eight-time All-American. She won the 800 meters both indoors and outdoors in 2010 and was part of UNO's national championship 4 x 400 meter relay team in 2009. The native of Medvode, Slovenia also was the MIAA 800 meter champion indoors in 2010 and 2011 and a member of the MIAA champion 4 x 400 meter relay teams in 2009 and 2010. Outdoors, she was the MIAA champion in the 800 meters in 2009 and 2010 and the 1,500 meter champion in 2010 and also was a member of the champion 4 x 100 meter relay in 2009 and the 4 x 400 meter relay in 2010. She was an All-MIAA performer 11 times, and she still holds four school records and is part of two others. In addition, she earned UNO's Connie Claussen Senior Career Achievement Award in 2012.
The Night of Honor also will recognize the 20th anniversary of the first UNO hockey team. Former head coach Mike Kemp and many of his former players are expected to be on hand.
The UNO Athletics Hall of Fame was begun as a joint venture between athletics and the alumni association. Garcia, Hastmann Walch and Puc will join 113 other inductees enshrined in the Hall.
