Mavericks Run All-Time Bests at NCAA Regionals

AMES, Iowa - The Omaha cross country team concluded its season with a flurry of all-time performances at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship at Iowa State.
Renata Valquier Chavez paced the Mavericks with the second fastest 6k in program history - just one second off the record. She finished 92nd in 21:40.4. Willa Koenig followed suit with a personal record of her own in 22:00.8, finishing 130th. Koenig's time is the fourth fastest in program history.
Assistant coach Cliff Cisar heaped praise on Valquier Chavez for battling through injury to nearly capture the school record.
"Renata has battled an injury that has made her training a little inconsistent," said Cisar. "But her finish was less than one second off of the school record set by Anja Puc, who was recently inducted into the UNO hall of fame and a multiple DII National Champion."
Emily Johnson capped off her impressive freshman campaign with yet another personal record, taking 147th in 22:14.0 and claimed the seventh fastest time in program history. Kayla Sabotin crossed the line in 22:27.3, finishing 166th, good for ninth fastest in Mavericks history.
Anita Jenkins is posted the 14th best time in program history with her 23:09.8 performance. She placed 199th at the meet.
Alyssa Averhoff finished 209th in 23:31.8 while Karo Garcia finished 221st in 24:13.1.
The Mavericks finished 29th in the field of 33 teams with a score of 730.
UNO's performances were no small feat considering the conditions they were run in. With the temperature sitting in the 20s and the wind chill in the teens, the conditions were less than ideal for personal bests.
"In frigid temperatures this group of ladies showed a tremendous amount of resilience and grit," said Cisar. "I'm extremely proud of how tough we competed, and the majority of the group ran their best 6k ever when it mattered most."
With five new top-15 all-time performers and four returning next year, Cisar expressed excitement for the future of Omaha cross country.
