Hunke Named Nebraska Girls Golfer of the Year

OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman Hannah Hunke of the Omaha women's golf team has been named the 2017 Nebraska Girls' Amateur Golfer of the Year.
The native of Snyder, Neb. who finished the fall season competing for the Mavericks in all five tournaments, earned the award by virtue of her play during her senior season at Guardian Angels Central Catholic in the spring and in several state events during the summer.
Hunke was the best female junior golfer in 2017, but that didn't stop her from taking on those outside her age bracket, or even those of the other gender. Hunke's year started with her competing on the boys' golf team at Guardian Angels. Not only did she compete, she led her team to a berth in the Class D Championship. In a field of more than 90 boys, Hunke continued to show her talents, putting together rounds of 83 (+11) and 84 (+12) to earn a medal, tying for 13th place. Her team finished seventh out of 15 teams.
Hunke kept that momentum rolling a couple weeks later at the 55th Nebraska Girls' Match Play Championship at Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg. She tied for the second lowest score in Stroke Play Qualifying, and earned the No. 4 seed for match play. From there, she faced some tough competition, but continued to come out on top until she faced friend and fellow Indian Trails Country Club member, Lacie Fox of Beemer, in the final. Fox won the title, and Hunke finished runner-up.
Hunke took on the best girls' juniors in the state on her home course, with Indian Trails hosting the 17th Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship in July. Hunke was one of just three players to post two rounds in the 70s, with rounds of 79 (+8) and 77 (+6) on a challenging golf course to finish fourth.
In the 2017 NWAGA Match Play Championship at Platteview Golf Club in Bellevue, Hunke upset the No. 4 seed in the opening round, Doniphan's Brandi Lemek, a UNK golfer. Then another win came in the quarterfinals over Omaha's Marcia Morell. She eventually fell to former Husker Kayla Barnes of Papillion in the semifinals.
In June, Hunke also tied for second at the Nebraska Junior PGA Championship at The Pines Country Club in Valley, finishing in the top five at the U.S. Girls' Junior Sectional Qualifier at Elks Country Club in Columbus, just missing out on a qualifying spot.
Hunke will be honored at the Nebraska Golf Association's annual awards banquet on Friday, November 17 at The Country Club of Lincoln. In addition, the NGA will recognize its Amateur Golfer of the Year, Junior Amateur Golfer of the Year and Senior Amateur Golfer of the Year. The Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association's Player of the Year will also be honored.
