OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team will take part in the Summit League Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25 at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex at South Dakota State.
Events begin each day at 9:30 a.m.
The Mavericks have had performances in the top eight in the Summit during the indoor season. Junior Stephanie Ahrens is tied for the top spot in the high jump with a mark of 5-08 which she set at the Kansas State Winter Invitational in December. Ahrens was the runner up in the event to teammate Taryn Derickson last season, but she has been battling injury and is not expected to compete in the championship.
Senior Alyssa Thavenet has the Summit's third-best time in the 800 meters this season. She ran a personal-best time of 2:11.06 at the SDSU Indoor Classic on Feb. 10.
Thavenet also ranks 14th in the 400 meters with a PR of 58.10 which she set last week at the Nebraska Tune-Up.
In the 60 meter hurdles, freshman Sasha Quattlebaum is just outside the top eight, tying for 10th with a time of 9.14 set at the K-State Winter Invitational.
In other field events, freshman Nyakuome Thichiot is 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-02 ¼ which she earned at the USD Last Chance Meet last Friday.
Anna Edet put up the third-best weight throw mark in school history, throwing 53-05 ¾ at the USD Last Chance Meet to put her 12th in the Summit this season. She also ranks 17th in the shot put at 42-00 ¾.
UNO ranks sixth in both relay events. The team of Sydnee Mitchell-Jemison, Lauren Houston, Thavenet and Kayla Sabotin ran a time of 3:58.55 at the SDSU indoor Classic on Feb. 10. It was the Mavericks' fastest time in the event in two years.
The team of Thavenet, Mitchell-Jemison, Houston and Anita Jenkins is sixth in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:40.59 which they ran at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Nebraska in January.
The Mavericks have finished fifth in the indoor championship in each of the last two seasons.
