SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Omaha track & field team tied with Western Illinois for sixth in the annual Summit League indoor preseason coaches' poll.
The Mavericks and Leathernecks each received 13 points in the voting. North Dakota State was picked to repeat as champions, earning 42 points and six first-place votes. South Dakota was chosen as the runner up with 35 points and one first-place vote. The complete poll appears below.
Senior Stephanie Ahrens has been named as an athlete to watch this season. The native of Lincoln, Neb. redshirted the indoor season of her junior year, making this her last season of competition for the Mavericks. Ahrens is the defending Summit indoor high jump champion, earning gold with a jump of 5-09 ½.
Ahrens is a three-time Summit outdoor high jump champion, a four-time NCAA qualifier in the event and an All-American, Omaha's first in track & field in the Division I era. She owns the school's indoor high jump record at 5-10 ¾ and is the co-holder of the outdoor record at 5-11 ½.
The Mavericks open the indoor season at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic at Northwest Missouri State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
