Edet Sets New School Record With Top Finish In Weight Throw

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Omaha track and field program completed its opening meet for the indoor season at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic, which took place at Northwest Missouri State Friday through Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
The meet was highlighted by Anna Edet's first-place finish in the weight throw. The senior set a facility record and out-performed her previous school record with a distance of 17.92 meters (58'.95") on her final throw. With the distance, she also won the event by over 10 feet.
"I was extremely pleased that they were able to have so many great performances this early," said head coach Chris Richardson. "I'm impressed at where our freshman are and our returners are well ahead of where they were at this point last year. Based on her practices, I knew Anna was capable of throwing far, but I didn't know it would happen this early. Our fall training has been solid and now we need to carry this momentum into the break."
For the 60-meter dash, Scarlett Hill set a new personal best with a time of 7.99 seconds and finished seventh of 43 spots, while freshman Sophia Kirwan was just behind in ninth with a time of 8.04 seconds. Kirwan also placed in the top-half (19th/45) for her first-ever 200-meter race, as she tallied a time of 26.87 seconds.
The Mavericks are off until the new year, where they continue the indoor season at the Graduate Classic, which takes place at Nebraska in Lincoln. Competition is set to take place Jan. 11-12. For more information on results, meet times and other details, visit OMavs.com.
