Houston Highlights Mavericks' Final Day at Summit Championship

TULSA, Okla. – Junior Lauren Houston earned All-Summit League honors by finishing runner up in the 800 meters at the Summit outdoor championship on Saturday.
The Mavericks finished in sixth place at the championship with a team score of 22 points. South Dakota came from behind to tie North Dakota State as Summit League champions with matching scores of 263. Oral Roberts, which hosted the event, was third with 116 points.
Houston ran a time of 2:10.62, her second fastest time in the 800 this season, to finish 1.03 behind Krista Steele of South Dakota State. Houston led for the first 600 meters of the race on a hot and windy day at Oral Roberts.
"Leading a race like the 800m in windy conditions isn't always ideal," said head coach Chris Richardson. "But Lauren and Coach (Cliff) Cisar knew that she had to get out fast in order to have a shot at winning."
It was Houston's second All-Summit recognition for finishing in the top three of an event after taking third in the indoor 800 meters as a freshman.
In the relays, the team of Sasha Quattlebaum, Lexi Riley, Jaycee Schettler and Brekk Flax took seventh in the 4x100 meters with a time of 50.89.
In the 4x400 meters, the combo of Houston, Alexis Allgood, Daylee Olson and Riley finished seventh in a time of 4:05.84.
"We had some illnesses that caused us to have to adjust our relays on short notice, but we had individuals step up and perform when they needed to," added Richardson.
In the triple jump, Noni Henderson put up a season-best wind-aided mark of 36-11 ½ to finish 13th.
"I'm happy that Noni was able to finish in a high note," said Richardson. "She and Coach (Jill) Sutton have been working a lot on her approach and it paid off."
