STILLWATER, Okla. – The Omaha cross country team finished in 24th place at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship on Friday. The finish, in a field of 33 teams, was the Mavericks' highest in the Division I era.
Junior Emily Johnson led the Mavericks for the fifth time in six meets this season with a time of 21:21.8 over the 6K course at Oklahoma State. She finished 26th overall in the pack of 231 runners, the highest ever for a Maverick in the regional.
Heidi Hall was second on the team and 99th overall with a time of 22:30.9. Â
"I was extremely impressed with those two today," said Cliff Cisar, head cross country coach. "To run near personal best times on a true, tough cross country course shows the grit and toughness this group has developed during the last 12 weeks.
"Our group competed their tails off."
The year-over-year improvements for both runners bears out Cisar's estimation. Johnson improved her place in the meet from 147 as a freshman while Hall was 207th just last season.
In addition, Anita Jenkins improved from 225th place in her first season to 168th, and Ivanna Uribe went from 228 last season to 198th.
Jenkins was third for the Mavericks with a time of 23:36.6, and Uribe placed fourth in team scoring with a time of 24:29.5.
Freshman Maya Nachtigal completed the scoring for UNO with a time of 24:56.9, good for 216th place.
Also running for the Mavericks was Raegan Andersen (25:25.3). Joanna Topham started the race but did not finish due to injury.
As a team, the Mavericks posted a score of 686. UNO's previous best finish at the Midwest Regional was 28th in 2016.
