Mavericks Set School Record on Opening Day of Championships

Summit League Release Day One Results

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Omaha swimming and diving team kicked off action at the 2020 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare with a school record and a pair of top-three relay finishes on the first day.

In the final relay of the evening, Bethany Gatlin, Annie Leinart, Rachel Morrow and Lizzy Giese finished second in the 800 free relay with a school record time of 7:29.56. The quartet bested the previous school record of 7:29.79 set at last year's Summit League Championships.

The Mavericks opened the night with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Megan Latta, Caroline Gardner, Gatlin and Brook Landt swam a 1:43.98 to earn 32 points for the Mavericks in the team standings.

"It was just an amazing opening night for us," said head coach Todd Samland. "We had both of our relay qualify for the National Invitational Championships and the 200 medley just missed out on the school record. I am really proud of our 800 free relay for qualifying for the NIC and setting a school record. Our future looks bright with three freshmen, a sophomore and three seniors on the two relay teams."

The Mavericks continue action at the Summit League Championships tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
