Trio of Mavericks Garner Academic Accolades

OMAHA, Neb. – Three Omaha student-athletes will receive academic recognition at the Student Honors Convocation on Wednesday afternoon. Nathan Reekie of men's tennis and softball's Emma Dargy will be presented the Outstanding Student-Athlete Awards for their academic and athletic achievements and contributions to the university and community while volleyball's Jaclyn Taylor will earn the Biomechanics Undergraduate Major Award.
Dargy is a student in the Bachelor of Science program while majoring in computer science and mathematics with a 3.97 grade-point average. The La Vista, Neb., native is a three-time Summit League Academic Honor Roll member and earned a spot on the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence in 2017-18 and 2018-19. In 2019, she was an Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete while also tabbed Academic All-Summit and Second Team All-Summit.
"It means a lot to me to be recognized with this award as an outstanding student-athlete because I know how many other hard-working student-athletes there are here at UNO," said Dargy. "It's nice to see all of the hard work that I have put in over the years being recognized."
Throughout her career as a Maverick, Dargy consistently left her mark on the Omaha community. From volunteering at the "Mighty Mavericks" event each year, to participating in the Athletes and Elders program, Dargy impacted both the young and the young at heart while mentoring and tutoring at Girls Inc. for the past two years.
Reekie is a student in the Bachelor of Business Administration program with a triple concentration in business finance, banking and financial markets and investment science/portfolio management and carries a 3.93 GPA. The Sugar Land, Texas, native is a three-time selection to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll and a two-time Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence nominee while playing 142 matches and lettering four times with the Mavericks. The senior tied the program record with his 33rd career singles victory earlier this season. As a freshman and sophomore, he was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.
"It's a great feeling to know that my hard work has culminated into something tangible and worthy of recognition," said Reekie. "Not only is this the end of my time at UNO, but it's also an exciting bridge to new beginnings."
Outside of his commitment to tennis and academics, Reekie has tutored for the Omaha Athletic Department, helped with the annual "Snow Day with the Mavs" event and assisted with the coordination and running of the "Mighty Mavericks" event.
Taylor is a student in the Bachelor of Biomechanics program and was honored with an Undergraduate Major Award for her work in the classroom with a 3.74 GPA. In her two-year career as a Maverick setter, Taylor was named to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. The St. Charles, Ill., native was also a team captain and a recipient of "The Ring," which is an Omaha volleyball tradition that dates back to the 1983 Final Four team. Taylor is going on to pursue her Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
"Without UNO, I would not have been able to study biomechanics," said Taylor. "Thank you to my coaches Rose Shires and Matt Buttermore as well as all the academic support here at UNO for giving me this opportunity."
Taylor also volunteered in the biomechanics research building and with Team Impact, Fit Girl and the Madonna Rehabilitation Center.
