2019-20 Omaha Men's Golf - Year In Review

NCAA golf is that rare sport that spans two season. It begins when the school year starts, before the leaves change color, and ends just as those leaves are opening up.
The Omaha men’s golf team built a strong foundation in the fall and was off to a promising start in the spring when the COVID-19 pandemic brought sports around the globe to a halt. Still, there were plenty of highlights in the Mavericks’ shortened season.
Tiger
Going into the season, the Mavericks knew they had a bona fide star in senior Witchayapat “Tiger” Sinsrang. The native of Thailand was an All-Summit League Second Team pick the year prior after finishing fourth in scoring in the league. In the fall, he led the team in scoring in three of the five tournaments and tied a school record by shooting 206 at Colorado on Oct. 7-8.

Not Just a One-Man Show
In 2019-20, senior Nick Kagy was the “Butch” to Sinsrang’s “Sundance Kid”. Kagy led the Mavericks in scoring in every tournament that Sinsrang did not including two in the fall and one in the spring. His best outing came in late October at Old Dominion’s tournament in North Carolina – a 54-hole career best of 210 to end the fall with a bang.
He finished the season earning Omaha's second straight Summit League Golfer of the Week Award.

Broken Records
The Mavericks did a number on the record book, in spite of the shortened season. On Oct. 7-8 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, they shot a 54-hole team score of 848, a school record. In the second round, they also carded a four-man score of 279 in round two, yet another school record.
Individually, Sinsrang tied his own school record for lowest round, shooting a 65 in the opening round of The Joust at Goose Creek on Feb. 24.

Sterling Spring Debut
The Mavericks looked anything but rusty when they opened their spring season at California Baptist’s The Joust at Goose Creek. They won the event by nine strokes, shooting a team score of 870. It was their first tournament win since 2014.
Sinsrang was the individual medalist of the event, shooting a score of 208. It was the first time a Maverick was the overall winner of a tournament since Kevin Gordon won the Summit League Championship in 2016.
His efforts earned him the Summit League Co-Golfer of the Week.

Year-End Stats
By the time the season had come to its premature end, the 2019-20 Mavericks had made their mark. The team ranked fifth in the Summit League with a scoring average of 294.8. Sinsrang ranked fourth in the league with a stroke average of 71.9, the best single-season stroke average in school history. Kagy was second at 73.0.
Sinsrang and Kagy finished their careers ranked 1-2 in career scoring average at 72.75 and 74.40 respectively.
Less golf than usual but plenty to celebrate with this year’s Mavericks.
