Letters From Home: Abby Johnson

Dear Omaha,
The world is changing quickly, and in a way that nobody can predict. Currently I am at home in Minnesota, just finished up finals and holding onto the hope that I can be reunited with my team again come July. In a time of unease and uncertainty, finding things to keep me busy and from going stir crazy is really important. Working out has been my main escape from all of this because it’s the only thing that I can control right now and making myself better each day until I can come back to Omaha to train. Along with that, spending time with my family and close friends has been refreshing in a world that has been utterly draining. On top of all of that, I have probably spent countless hours re-watching my favorite shows. Keeping In communication with my teammates and coaches daily is also helping me get through this tough time because it reminds me that everyone is in the same boat.

We all know this is a time of major change, and while I’ve been home, I feel like I’ve done just that. I've used this time to reset my perspective. Although the virus is a very negative thing in all of our lives right now, it has made me realize what is truly important in life. I recommended everyone to use this uncertain time to reconnect with their family, old friends and community. I have never seen more people outside, walking around and just enjoying the earth we all share. Realizing that I don’t have control over this situation has helped me to take a step back and be grateful for my health, family, friends and especially my second home at UNO that I cannot wait to get back to when it is safe. During this time in quarantine, it has given me a lot of time to think about life. In particular, how lucky I feel to be a student and an athlete at Omaha. Being away from campus and the beautiful city of Omaha has only made me appreciate the time and experiences I’ve had even more.

I cannot wait to get back to campus. (I never thought I’d say this, but) I miss going to class. I miss the excitement of seeing my teammates, coaches, classmates and teachers daily. The buzz of a lively and upbeat campus filled with people is something that I will never take for granted again. One of the reasons I chose to come to school at Omaha is because of the community feel of it all and the hometown pride of the people that live there.
Thank you to all of the fans of women’s basketball. We appreciate you more than you know and we can’t wait to get back out on the floor. Thinking about gamedays come next fall and winter, it is hard to contain the joy and excitement I feel to be back under the lights of Baxter Arena and to be representing Omaha across my jersey.
Thank you, Omaha, see you soon.
