OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Athletics posted its highest all student-athlete grade point average in the Division I era this spring.
The group of 251 Mavericks earned a GPA of 3.562 in the spring semester, surpassing the previous high of 3.429 earned in the spring of 2014. All 15 of UNO's teams earned a 3.2 GPA or better.
"I am really proud of our student-athletes," said Lindsey Ekwerekwu, senior associate athletic director for academic success. "When the pandemic broke, we had no idea what it would mean for them. With the support of coaches and our campus, the students did a wonderful job finishing the semester on their own at home.
"It's a true testament to the kind of student-athletes we are recruiting and their motivation to succeed."
The impressive numbers include 225 student-athletes, or 90 percent, earning at least a 3.0 GPA while 154, or 61 percent, made either the Dean's List (3.5) or the Chancellor's List (4.0).
Volleyball led all UNO teams with a team GPA of 3.788, edging out women's soccer (3.782) and swimming & diving (3.777).
Men's tennis led UNO's six men's squads with a cumulative GPA of 3.587, a new high in Division I. In fact, three other Maverick men's teams earned at least a 3.5 including baseball (3.535), men's golf (3.541) and hockey (3.522). Men's basketball earned a 3.230 GPA, its highest ever as a Division I program.
Women's soccer placed 82 percent of its roster on either the Dean's or Chancellor's Lists to lead all teams. Women's soccer and swimming & diving each had eight team members on the Chancellor's List while baseball, hockey and men's soccer all had 12 student-athletes on the Dean's List.
