To All Mavericks (Student-Athletes, Students, Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Supporters, Friends):
Like all of you, we have been saddened and concerned by the tragic events that have unfolded over the past week in our nation and our state. They are a reminder that we must take action to ensure that all persons are treated with the love and respect that they deserve no matter their race, religion, gender, sexuality or other characteristics that make each of us unique. Â
As we reflect on all that has happened, including events right here in Omaha, we can draw on our experiences in sport to help us better understand why our individual differences ultimately make us a better society. The best teams, no matter the sport or the competition, are those that successfully bring together people with complementary differences – in skillset, speed, size, strength, experiences and backgrounds. As a team works to achieve its goals, individual team members lift each other up and celebrate their collective success.
Right now, many citizens of our community and our nation are hurting, and we hurt with you. We respect your rights and encourage you to use your voices to help us all understand how we need to improve as a society. We also remind ourselves that in the days, weeks, months and perhaps years ahead, we must embark on this process with mutual respect, understanding and compassion for everyone. Â
As the premier public metropolitan university of our state, we hope to be a source of pride for everyone in our community, to be an example of how to gather together to better understand and celebrate our differences and work together to ensure that each individual feels the love and respect that they deserve. This process won't be easy and it won't be quick, but it is the most worthwhile endeavor.
