Coach Speak: Adam Summitt

I truly believe things in life happen for a reason. In 2016 I was coaching at Ottawa University, a small NAIA school in Kansas, when I saw the job posting for head women’s tennis coach at UNO. I was dating my girlfriend of three years at the time, who was living and working in Des Moines. In the summer of 2016, we decided we need to find a place where we both could work and live. We both were from Iowa and didn’t want to be too far from family. We circled Omaha as a potential destination.
I ended up interviewing for the position in July. I didn’t get a call back immediately. I was ready to make plans to continue coaching in Kansas when I got the call. I accepted and talked to my girlfriend right after and simply said, “Call the movers because we have a new home in Omaha.” Four years later, here we are and I could not be happier with this decision.
We absolutely love Omaha. Everything about the city and environment is what we wanted in a place to live – from eating at our favorite local restaurants, to going to A-list concerts and everything else this great city offers.
When recruits ask me what I enjoy most about living in Omaha, besides what I mentioned before, it’s the people. My wife and I are Midwestern people and that is what you get here. We are neighbors who are friendly and willing to help you in a time of need. The same can be said for all the coaches, staff and faculty at UNO. Everyone will do anything possible to make sure you succeed on and off the court or field.
In these uncertain times, I know my role is to be a solid base for the team and make sure to do everything I can to support my players. We know our fellow Mavericks are also doing whatever they can to make sure we are able to have a successful season when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we continue to practice and train every day so when our number is called, we can proudly represent this city.
