Dear Omaha,
Two years ago, I brought my family to a state that's lived up to its slogan, “The Good Life,” and a university that's lived up to its fight song lyrics, “Be it win, lose or draw, Everyone for Omaha.” You have welcomed us with open arms and we really appreciate it. Along with a great city to raise our kids in, you give our Maverick student-athletes a first-class experience.
Omaha Softball is so much more than just another Division I program. Omaha is where our sport's first national championship (AIAW) was held in 1969-1979. Omaha Softball hosted the initial tournament, which led to the creation of the women's athletic department at UNO.
I am grateful to Athletic Director Emerita Connie Claussen for making that happen. Thanks to her impact on the sport and women's athletics at Omaha, we are excited to showcase her name on the first on-campus UNO softball stadium, which will open in spring 2021. I'm so lucky to learn about our sport's rich history from the pioneer herself.
Our softball program continues to recruit excellent players with high academic standards who will play on the Connie Claussen Field for their college careers. They will carry on the standard set by the 1975 and 2001 national championship teams. We have a rich tradition of championships at Omaha, and our student-athletes will honor the achievements of our past to help create the future of our program.
Thank you for your steady dedication to Omaha Athletics, our softball program, our university and our city. We are so excited to share our future success with you.
