
Matthews, Young Tabbed Swimmers of the Week

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Omaha swimming & diving swept the Summit League TicketSmarter Swimmer of the Week awards, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Hailey Matthews earned the award for the women after helping Omaha to a first place finish out of 10 teams at the Rochester Invite. Daniel Young earned it on the men's side after helping them to first out of eight teams.
It marks the first career honor for Matthews and second for Young.
Matthews helped rewrite the record books at the Rochester Invite posting three new program records. For Matthews, the meet started out with a new program record in her first event in the 500-free. She swam a time of 4:58.21 beating the previous record of 4:58.71 set in 2019. On the second day of action, Matthews shattered a 20-year program record with a time of 1:50.33 in the 200-Free. Matthews then closed the day helping the 400-medley relay team to a new program record with a time of 3:46.86.
She also picked up first-place finishes in the 100-Back (56.15), the 200-Fly (2:04.23), and the 400-Free Relay (3:27.48).
"Hailey has been putting together some great weeks of training," said head coach Todd Samland. "You can see her hard work paying off in the meets. You can see how much she loves the sport, competing, and her teammates. I'm excited to see what else she can accomplish this season."
Young earned his second honor of the season after posting seven first-place swims. Young was part of a that placed first in the 200-Medley Relay (1:29.34), the 800-Free Relay (6:46.19), the 200-Free Relay (1:21.86), and 400-Medley Relay (3.17.33). He then helped the 400-Free Relay to third (3:04.12).
Individually, Young placed first in the 200-IM (1:49.02), 100-Breast (53.90), 100-IM (50.32).
"Daniel is very focused and works extremely hard in practice," said Samland. "He pays attention to his recovery process and stays on top of his training. He brings a fun energy to practice every day that's great to be around. It will be exciting to see his future accomplishments."
