Mavericks Start Spring Season At The Joust

Omaha, Neb.- The Omaha men's golf team is back in action for the spring season Feb. 21-22 at the Joust at Goose Creek, hosted by California Baptist. The tournament tees off in Jurupa Valley, California this Monday and Tuesday.
Fifteen teams make up the tournament, hosted by California Baptist. The field includes Dixie State, CSU- Fullerton, Weber State, Simon Fraser, Morehead State, UC-Riverside, CSU-Northridge, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-San Diego, Claremont, Idaho, Cal State-Dominguez Hills, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Eight California schools join Cal Baptist in the event. Two Utah schools make the journey, as well as one school each from Idaho, Kentucky, and Canada, represented by Simon Fraser. Omaha is the lone representative for Nebraska and the Summit League at this invite.
The Mavericks are predicted to finish seventh in the Summit League based on the preseason coaches' poll. Josh Peters is a golfer to watch this year, as denoted by the League. The junior led Omaha with a stroke average of 73 last fall and carries a season-low round of 69 from the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.

Mathew Halvorson is looking to improve on what has already been a great senior campaign. Last fall, Halvorson had a stroke average of 74.5 and a career day at the Stampede at the Creek in Elkhorn. He shot a career-best 67 in one round and finished in third place overall.
Freshman Kurtis Rodriguez is coming off a fall season where he averaged 75.3 strokes per round and earned one top-ten finish at the Stampede at the Creek.
Sophomore Carter Doose had a stroke average of 75.0, including a top-20 finish at the Stampede at the Creek.
Josh Peters makes his first appearance in the lineup for Omaha. The junior had a stroke average of 76.4 in 2020-21. His lowest round came at the Grand Canyon where he shot a 71. He had one top-ten finish in eighth place at the Beu Mussatto invitational, but he did not play in the fall of 2021. He and the Mavericks look for a fresh start with the 2022 spring season.
The Joust at Goose Creek is a unique tournament. Three champions will be crowned after the final round on Tuesday. An individual medalist will be awarded, and a team champion will be crowned as with most invitationals. The third award will go to the all-five team champion. Most tournaments drop the fifth individual score, and the four remaining make up the team score. The Joust has an additional trophy for the best team-of-five in the tournament.
The Mavericks will have a chance at all three titles when action starts with a shotgun sound at 8 a.m. this Monday, Feb. 21. Live stats will be available on the OMavs.com website.
