Mavericks Win Big O Classic

Elkhorn, Neb.-- The Omaha men's golf team finished in first place after the final round of the Big O Classic in Elkhorn on Tuesday.
The teams sat inside the clubhouse for nearly three hours waiting to finish the two to five holes they had remaining. When the clouds parted and the sun shone brighter than it had all day, Omaha climbed to the top of the leaderboard and stayed there through the end. The first-place team finish is the second in program history and first under first-year head coach Joey Baldwin in his third tournament with the team.
The Mavericks scored 287 in the third round, totaling 878 throughout the tournament at Indian Creek golf course in Elkhorn. It was the best round of the 54-hole event for Omaha after scoring 297 and 294 in the first two rounds. A tiebreaker was needed to determine the team champion as Creighton had a matching 54-hole total of 878. Omaha was crowned the champion based on its third-round team score of 287 compared to Creighton's 291. Indian Hills CC's Gaspar Glaudas won the individual medal with a total score of 210 (-6).
Connor Wilson earned third place overall at the Big O Classic. Wilson totaled an even 216, scoring 74 (+2) in the first round before back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1). Connor led the tournament with 14 birdies en route to the second top-five finish of his two-year career with the Mavericks.
Christopher Atkinson scored 219 over three rounds, the best 54-hole score in his career at Omaha. Atkinson scored 76 (+4) in the first round. The junior scored a tournament-high two eagles in the second round for a score of 74 (+2) and finished by matching his career-best round with a score of 70 (-2) in the third. Atkinson finished with a share of seventh place for his first top-10 finish as a Maverick.
Austin Goodrum earned his first top-20 finish at Omaha with a three-round total of 221. The junior transfer used four birdies for an even round-one score of 72. Scoring 76 (+4) in the second, Goodrum bounced back with a 73 (+1) in the third round for a share of 16th place overall.
Nolan Johnson finished in a tie for 26th place after a 54-hole score of 224. Johnson scored 77 (+5) in the first round and 74 (+2) in the second round, He finished with a 73 (+1) in the final round on Tuesday, totaling 10 birdies throughout the event.
Marvin Luchutaskul tied for 65th place in the first home event of his career. The freshman scored 75 (+3) in round one, 78 (+6) in round two and finished with a score of 84 in round three. Luchutaskul ended the tournament with a 54-hole total of 237.
The next five golfers made up Omaha's second team at the Big O Classic. The Omaha "B" team earned 12th place at Indian Creek after a 54-hole total of 923.
Freshman Porter Topp led Omaha's second team in his collegiate debut. Topp utilized an eagle in round one for a score of 76 (+4). Porter followed that with a 73 (+1) in round two and ended the event with a 74 (+2) in round three. Topp earned 26th place on the individual leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 224.
Jack Tickle and Josh Peters tied for 47th and 53rd, respectively. Tickle totaled 231 throughout the tournament, scoring 75 (+3) in the first round with five birdies. Jack ended with scores of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) in rounds two and three. Peters was two strokes behind Tickle with a three-round score of 233. Josh scored 80 (+8) in round one, improving with an eagle and a score of 76 (+4) in round two. Peters ended the event with a 77 (+5) in round three.
Tyler Eedy tied for 63rd place after a total score of 236. Eedy scored 76 (+4), 82 (+10) and 78 (+6) over three rounds. Preston Cedergren finished four strokes behind Eedy, in 72nd place with a 54-hole total of 240. Cedergren scored 79 (+7), 82 (+10) and 79 (+7) in rounds one, two and three, respectively.
The Mavericks head to Homer, Neb., for the Throwdown Up Top. The two-day event played host by South Dakota begins on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and will wrap up with the final round on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
