Apr 13, 2023 | Men's Golf
Omaha, Neb.-- Redshirt senior Connor Wilson was named a Peak Golfer of the Week by the Summit League after recording the eighth best 54-hole score in Mavericks' history at the Stampede at the Creek in Elkhorn, Neb., last Tuesday, Apr. 11.
It is the second weekly award for Wilson this season and comes after a career-best three-round total of 208 (-8). Connor scored 69 (-3) in the first round on Monday. He followed that up with the best round in program history, using nine birdies in the second round for a score of 64 (-8). With a 75 (+3) in round three, he secured his spot at the top of the leaderboard. Wilson won the Stampede at the Creek by two strokes over Nebraska's Grant Jabenis.
"Connor obviously played some great golf," head coach Seth Porter said. "It was fun to watch him be in control of his game and emotions for 54 holes. He made my job easy as a coach as I just had to get out of his way. He knew what he was doing and played with a ton of confidence, which is what you want in this game."
Along with the first-place finish, there are a few other 'firsts' to mention. Wilson is the first Maverick to win an invitational hosted by Omaha. He is also the first to earn an individual medal since Witchayapat Sinsrang took first place at the Joust at Goose Creek in February of 2020. Additionally, it is Connor's first individual medal of his career.
Wilson and the Mavericks will wrap up the 2023 season in two weeks at the Summit League Championship in Lincoln, Neb. Action from Wilderness Ridge golf course begins on Sunday, Apr. 30.
