Six Top 10 Performances Highlight Azusa Pacific Invitational

The Mavericks traveled to rainy/sunny California to compete against athletes from all over North America.
Lauren Metzger started off a wet Friday morning in the 10000m with a time of 37:31.46 which was the 5th fastest time in school history. That was the followed up by Maya Nachtigal running the 5000m in a 24 second PR of 17:33.78 briefly moving her up to #5 in school history until teammate Kamryn Ensley took to the track. Ensley's time of 17:32.69 won her section and narrowly edged Nachtigal to place her as the 4th ever fastest Maverick over the 5000m distance. In the 800m, Gwen Steffen fought hard for a season best time of 2:14.57, less than 2 seconds off her all-time best.
Friday closed out in the field events with Mary Fennessy launching the hammer 152'8" for a 7 foot lifetime best and the 7th farthest throw in school history.
Saturday began on the track with the 4x100m relay team of Tania Gleason, Nina Cuevas, Emma Klein and Carrie Simonson running their 2nd fastest time of the year in 48.17. Gleason followed that up by running a lifetime best of 12.28 in the 100m. The busy day on the track continued with over 600 athletes competing in 32 sections of the 1500m. Emily Treptow ran a PR of 4:50.56. Lily Jackson ran a college best 4:49.82. Gwen Steffen ran to an all-time best of 4:49.66, and Paige Blackford crossed the line in a PR of 4:48.06.
In the Saturday field events, Kaitlin Hellbusch jumped her highest bar of the year with a clearance of 5'3.75 in the high jump. Lucy Turner threw her 2nd farthest throw of her career in the javelin with 123'2", just one inch off her best. In the shot put, Mary Fennessy threw a season best of 44'1.75". In the last field event of the day, a pair of Mavericks had big jumps in mind in the triple jump. Taylor Ramaekers leaped over a foot farther than her previous best to 38'6.25". Not to be outdone, Emma Klein propelled herself through the three phases out to 38'8.25". Ramaekers finished the day 5th all-time in school history and Klein at 3rd all-time.
"That was quite a couple days. 6 all-time performances is quite an accomplishment for our team and show the hard work they're putting in. We celebrate their success, but know we will get back to work this week to continue this momentum."
