Mavericks Perform Well in First Outdoor Meet of 2023

The Omaha Mavericks Track & Field squad competed in their first outdoor meet of the 2023 season yesterday at the Central Nebraska Challenge in Kearney, Nebraska. The Mavericks registred multiple top three finishes along with two event victories.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

The day started out with Chloe Cox dawning the Omaha jersey for the first time finishing 3^rd in the open javelin with a distance of 110'9"
Carrie Simonson finished 2^nd in the long jump with a leap of 17'10.75"
In the high jump, Kaitlin Hellbusch finished 5^th with a height of 5'1"
Kinsey Scheffler set a new lifetime best in the hammer throw with a distance of 134'3"
Marry Fennessy finished 3^rd in the invitational section of the shot put with a toss of 43'11.25"
The first event on the track saw the 4x100m relay team of Tania Gleason, Nina Cuevas, Emma Klein and Carrie Simonson come away with the victory with a time of 47.90. Simonson got the baton in 5 meters place behind Fort Hays State and ran her down at the line.
In the 100m, a trio of Mavericks finished in the top 8 with Simonson finishing 2^nd in 12.29, Cuevas 5^th in 12.47 and Gleason 7^th in 12.53.
In the 200m, Sophomore Macy Persinger ran a new lifetime best of 26.24. Freshman Tania Gleason won the event in a blazing 25.30.

"It was evident that we were a little rusty since this is our first competition in 5 weeks, but we still had a number of people perform well," Omaha head coach Chris Richardson said. " Multiple top 3 finishes and two victories is a good day considering this is the first time the majority of our team as stepped foot on an outdoor track this year. For those who didn't perform to their expectations and even those who did, this is not the destination, but the starting point. There are many more opportunities to be great."

The Mavericks will look to continue their early outdoor success next Friday and Saturday at the USD Early Bird meet in Vermillion, South Dakota.
