Mavericks Piece Together Solid Two-Day Outing at USD Alumni Meet

In the 2nd meet of the 2024 indoor campaign, the Maverick Track and Field team walked away with an impressive number of personal bests at the USD Alumni meet.

Action opened up on Friday at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, SD with a trio of Mavericks in their first pentathlon of the season.

Jade Jackson led the way in the 60m hurdles with a 1st place finish and a season best time of 9.21, good for 867 points . Senior Roxy Denton came away with a lifetime best of 9.53 and 802 points. In their next event, freshman Julia Niemeyer had the highest jump in the high jump with a height of 5'2.25" for 712 points. Denton continued her strong start by tying her indoor personal best height. The three turned it on in the shot put with each coming away with a personal best. Denton had the farthest throw of all the competitors with a two and a half foot PR of 35'10.75". Right behind her Niemeyer threw a massive PR of 35'6.75". It was then on to the long jump where Denton again had another indoor personal best of 16'6". Ahead of her, Jackson was only 1 cm shy of her indoor PR with a jump of 16'11.25". Niemeyer had the farthest jump for the Mavericks with a distance of 17'4.75". After the dreaded 800m to finish out the Pentathlon, Denton came away with a PR score of 2972. Jackson finished 3rd in the competition with a score of 2981 and Niemeyer in 2nd with 3228. Niemeyer score ranks her #10 all-time in program history.

Not to be outdone by the multi event athletes, sophomore Emma Klein also decided to put herself in the top 10 list in the triple jump. On her 4th attempt, she set an indoor personal best of 38'5 which was good for 1st place and landed her at #10 all-time in UNO history.

On day two of the meet, a barrage of Mavericks lined up for the 60m with sophomore Tania Gleason tying her personal best of 7.82 for 3rd place. Avyn Urbanski was just behind her in 7.88 and Nina Cuevas and Ashley Ostrand both came away with season best times.

In the 60m hurdles, Grace Mustard ran a season best time of 9.29 for 3rd place. In the Mavericks only distance event of the day, freshman Lily Schwartz had a very impressive performance in the mile by cruising to a PR time of 5:15.06 and 4th place.

In the field events, freshman Hannah Dunning had a 2nd place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17'3.25". In the vertical jumps, both Kaitlin Hellbusch and Milan Coggins cleared a season best height of 5'3.75" in the high jump. Both had good attempts of the next bar.

"Overall we had some people do some really good things. I'm extremely impressed with our younger athletes with two of them getting into our top 10 list. If they can maintain that momentum, their futures are going to be very bright. Next week we're going against some very good competition at Iowa State so everyone needs to be focused on what they need to do. No excuses. If you only put in 50% effort and work, you're results are going to show that."

Omaha returns to action next Saturday when they head to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic.
