Feb 11, 2024 | Track & Field
The Mavericks were back in action at the SDSU Classic on Friday and Saturday in Brookings, SD.
Friday began with multi-event athlete Roxy Denton throwing a lifetime best in the shot put with a distance of 35'11.5". On the track, the 5000m was the main event of the night. In the second section, Emma Hain ran her first 5000m on the track and clocked an impressive 18:59.36. In the 3rd and final section, Lauren Metzger and Kamryn Ensley toed the line, coming off their impressive 3000m performances the previous week. When all the laps were complete, Metzger came away with the 5th fastest time in program history with a 17:45.29. Ensley accomplished the amazing feat of breaking the eight-year-old school record held by former Mav Ashley Kildow. Ensley's time of 17:20.95 broke the record by seven seconds.
Day two saw Jade Jackson race down the track to a lifetime best time of 7.85 in the 60m, beating her previous fastest by over a quarter second. Nina Cuevas ran a season best time of 8.00m and Ashley Ostrand was just .01 off her season best with an 8.15. In the 400m Tania Gleason won her heat of the 400m in an impressive lifetime best of 58.20. Macy Persinger was just behind in a 58.49 for her 2nd fastest time and freshman Ava Robinson ran a season best 59.25. In the 800m Emily Tretow ran a lifetime best of 2:19.45 and dropped under 2:20 for the first time. Lily Jackson ran a college best of 2:23.72. Moving up to the mile, Lily Schwartz ran a gutsy race and came away with a four second PR of 5:10.83. Gabriella Calderon had an impressive 14 second PR of 5:31.26.
In the high jump, Kaitlin Hellbusch tied her indoor PR of 5'4.25" to tie for 5th place. She was also good on attempts of 5'6".
In the final event of the day, the 4x400m team of Macy Persinger, Tania Gleason, Ava Robinson and Nina Cuevas ran their fastest time in 4 years with a 3:57.97.
"I'm very happy for Kamryn and Coach Cisar. They have been putting in a lot of hard work and the 5000m record going down was bound to happen. I think they both know there's more in the tank and that record can go down even more. At the end of the day, it's the little things that are going to make the difference. If you can't do the little things correctly, the big ones don't matter. They can seem insignificant, but repeatedly neglecting something that seems minor will eventually become a major issue. Do the little things right and the rest will be easier. We have two weeks to focus on the little things before the Summit Championships," said head coach Chris Richardson.
The Mavericks will next travel to Lincoln on Friday for the Nebraska Tune-Up before heading to Fargo, ND for the Indoor Summit Championships.
