Mavericks Break Three School Records During Second Day of Summit League Championship

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - The Omaha swim and diving squad had another solid day at the Summit League Championship.
Both the men and women now sit in third with 162 and 191 points, respectively.
"Our team performed so well today," said head coach Jessica Hessel. "They are all bought in on 'team first' and it has created an environment for our athletes to have stellar performances, one after another. We had 3 school records and we were so close in numerous other races today. There's a lot of swimming and diving left to do but what a great start to the championships. We will get some rest, refocus in the morning and do it all over again tomorrow."
The day started off with the 500-free where Hailey Matthews picked up third with a record-breaking time of 4:53.19. Kyle Kulow placed eighth in the event and also broke the school record with a time of 4:31.93.
Olivia Dendinger picked up 11 points in the 200-IM with an eighth-place finish and a time of 2:05.40. Caleb Miller placed sixth for the men with a final time of 1:49.87.
Payton Easley placed fourth in the 50-free with a time of 22.99, picking up 15 points. Owen Hoak placed fifth for the men with a time of 20.26.
In the 200-free relay, a women's team of Payton Easley, Morgan Baker, Parker Hagemann, and Hailey Matthews earned fourth with a time of 1:33.22. For the men, a team of Jace Walker, Caleb Miller, Grant Schaeffer, and Owen Hoak finished in fourth and breaking the school record with a time of 1:20.90.
In the women's 1-meter diving event, Darby Drake placed second with a final score of 270.85 picking up 17 points.
The 1-meter men's diving final tipped off the Championship action. Ian Blackstock represented the Mavericks, placing fourth with a score of 273.55.
"We had another solid day of diving from the whole team again today," said diving coach Eric Sprague. "David, Ian, and Will put some solid dives in during the exhibition Men's Team Event and finished in 3rd place. This looks to be a scoring event in the future and we are positioned well for it. Our ladies really performed well today. We put 3 divers into finals and Brooke was just one spot out from us having all four of our women in the top 8. Reece and Bella performed so well to finish in the 7th and 8th spots. Darby finished as the event runner-up and it's highest finish we've had in 6 years on the boards at this meet. I like the determination we're diving with at the Championship and I'm excited to see how the 3 meter boards will play out."
Day three of the action picks up tomorrow morning. Prelims will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m.
