OMAHA - Omaha Swimming and Diving dropped a two-day meet on the road to a strong Missouri State team. The men lost their first competition of the season, 256.5-95.5, while the women fell  at Hammons Student Center Pool in Springfield, Mo., 272-81.
The Mavericks saw important results in the 200-yard breast on the women's side on Saturday, as freshman Gracy MacLaughlin (Clarksville, Mo.) and junior Kate Novinski (Grand Island, Neb.) finished one-two (2:02.77 and 2.03.98). On Friday, sophomore Mason Zadina (Omaha, Neb.) won the 50-yard freestyle (20.54) while freshman Garrison Wells (Kansas City, Mo.) finished third (20.94).
"Proud of our team and the way they showed up to race this weekend," head coach Jessica Hessel said. "Friday was a solid start, and it was great to see the team build on that even more on Saturday."Â
Hessel also pointed out strong efforts from sophomore Addisyn Storms (Omaha, Neb.), senior Julia Thomas (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and sophomore James Lemus (Saint Michael, Minn.).
On the boards, junior Owen Kipp (Eagen, Minn.) continued his perfect campaign, winning the 1-meter (343.05) on Friday and completing the sweep to close out the two days of competition Saturday on the 3-meter (355.35).
"Congrats to Owen on keeping his season-long win streak alive this weekend," diving coach Eric Sprague said. "His approach to practicing and competing provides a good example for everyone in the program. We're looking forward to getting ready for our mid-season meet at the University of Missouri in a few weeks."
The swimmers now turn their focus to the A3 Invitational, November 12-14, at SIU's Shea Natatorium in Carbondale, IL
"We have some good information to take into A3, both from a race strategy standpoint and in our mental preparation," Hessel said. "Now it's about taking what we learned, continuing to fine-tune the details, and putting ourselves in the best position to execute when it matters most."
Diving competes next at the Mizzou Invite, November 18-20.
"I saw a group this weekend that competed with composure, focus, and determination," Sprague said. "Everyone put in some good dives throughout the weekend and the progress from meet to meet is encouraging."
The men's team is now 3-1 on the season while the women's team is 4-2.
