Mavericks Stung By Top Ranked Gophers

Minnesota exploded with five third period goals to defeat Nebraska-Omaha 7-3 in the third place game of the Maverick Stampede Tournament at Qwest Center Omaha on Saturday.
UNO scored the first three goals of the game in the second period before Minnesota answered back with two of its own. Freshman Scott Parse put the Mavs on the board 45 seconds into the period with a power play goal. Dan Knapp and Josh Weeks then made the score 3-0 on even strength goals at 8:16 and 14:55.
UM's Barry Tallackson and Judd Stevens closed UNO's margin with a power play tally at 17:36 and then a even strength goal with 26 seconds remaining in the period.
The third period was controlled by Minnesota as the Gophers scored five goals by five different players in a nine minute span.
UNO was outshot in the contest 45-21. Freshman Chris Holt made his first collegiate start for the Mavericks and made 38 saves.
The Mavericks (0-2-0) open CCHA next Friday at Western Michigan
