Mavs Drop CCHA Opener To Broncos

Kalamazoo, Mich.--The Nebraska-Omaha hockey team's winless streak reached 11 games Friday night with a 5-1 loss to Western Michigan at Lawson Ice Arena.
WMU took a 1-0 lead at 7:56 of the first period when UNO's Alex Nikiforuk attempted to poke check the puck out of the UNO zone in front of the net and deflected it between goaltender Chris Holt's legs. The goal was awarded to Western Michigan's Pat Dwyer.
The Broncos increased their lead to 2-0 when Lucas Drake connected on a slapshot from the right faceoff circle to beat Holt glove side at 11:13 of the first period.
UNO's lone goal of the night came at 3:52 of the second period when defenseman Mike Gabinet grabbed his own rebound and put the puck past goaltender Mike Mantua to cut the lead to 2-1. It was Gabinet's first goal since December 9, 2000, a span of 87 games. The Mavericks had several good scoring attempts in the second period and outshot the Broncos 20-8 in the period.
Western Michigan made the score 3-1 at 14:56 of the second period when Vince Bellissimo took a loose puck in front of the net off a rebound flipped it past Holt.
The Broncos put the game away in the third period on two goals by forward Dana Lattery at 8:02 and 15:49.
Chris Holt made 23 saves for the Mavericks in his second collegiate start. The Mavericks outshot Western Michigan 31-28 in the contest.
UNO (0-3-0, 0-1-0 CCHA) will meet Western Michigan again on Saturday in a 6:05 tilt.
