Mavs Win Opener, 66-58

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Mavericks battled from behind Friday night to post a season-opening 66-58 victory over Wayne State College in the Coyote Classic in the DakotaDome. UNO will meet Northern State Saturday night in the second game of the classic at 6 p.m. The game can be heard on KOIL, 1020 am.
The Mavericks trailed by as many as seven points the first half before scrambling back to forge a tie at 28 at the break. UNO then scored the first seven points of the second half and never trailed again.
Junior forward Lindsey Petersen (Missouri Valley, Iowa) led UNO with 13 points, while sophomore J.J. Smith (Lincoln) added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard LaCheryl Prince (Omaha) added 10 points.
"At times things didn't go well," UNO Coach Lisa Carlsen said. "But this is a team that fights back."
