Maverick Women Fall to Northern State, 69-56

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Northern State scored the final 13 points of the first half to overcome a 10-point Maverick lead and rode the momentum to a 69-56 victory in the Coyote Classic Saturday night in the DakotaDome. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 1-1 on the season.
A trio of Mavs - Lindsey Petersen, Andrea Schoepf and JJ Smith -- scored eight points apiece as UNO dominated play the first 16 minutes of the game. Three-pointers by Schoepf and Skeeter Zoucha gave the Mavericks their biggest lead of the game, 31-21, with 3:47 left in the opening half.
The Wolves (1-1) hit five of six shots in a 13-0 run down the stretch while UNO committed a pair of turnovers and went 0-for-7 to give Northern a 34-31 lead at the break.
UNO hung tough after intermission and trailed just 41-40 on Smith's layup with 14:15 left to play before Northern scored eight straight points to set up a 12-2 run and a 53-42 lead with 10:22 remaining.
The Mavs regrouped for one more run and pulled within 57-54 with 5:19 to play when Zoucha connected on a three-pointer, but Northern scored the next five points and held UNO to just two free shots the rest of the way and 0-for-10 from the field.
Petersen finished with 15 points to lead UNO, while Smith added 12 points and eight rebouhnds and Schoepf 11 points.
Carolin Becker led Northern with 12 points and Sara Jensen and Michelle Hanson scored 10 points each.
