
Mavericks Cruise to Tourney Win

Leslie Ross and Andrea Schoepf each scored 16 points to lead the Mavericks to an 85-54 win over William Penn Friday at Sapp Fieldhouse in the Maverick Classic. UNO will meet Minnesota State, Moorhead Saturday night at 6 in the second game of the classic.
The Mavs (2-1) raced to a 47-24 halftime lead over the Lady Statesmen (3-7) in front of 700 fans.
UNO forced 28 turnovers and held William Penn to just 32 percent shooting for the game in grabbing the win in its home opener. Chelsie Groslie added 11 points in the balanced Maverick attack in which 11 different players scored.
Kristina McNew acored 16 points and Jacinta Ojinnaka added 14 for the Lady Statesmen, who will meet South Dakota at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second round.
Ross, a freshman forward from Omaha, hit 10 points the first half and connected on 5 of 9 shots from the field and all six of her free throws and also led the team with eight rebounds.
The Mavs shot 43 percent in each half, committed just 15 turnovers and outrebounded William Penn, 47-41.
