Mavs Fall Short Against MSU-Moorhead

Minnesota State, Moorhead had four players score in double figures Saturday night to turn back the Mavericks, 69-64, in the second round of the UNO Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO fell to 2-2 with the loss to the Dragons.
The Dragons (3-2) pulled away in the closing minutes of a game that saw 16 ties and 28 lead changes.
UNO fought its way to a 31-29 halftime lead as Chelsie Groslie connected on three three-point shots and 11 points.
The Mavs never led by more than three the second half, 48-45, with 8:05 left, but suffered from cold shooting down the stretch.
Shannon Eggers' short jumper with 4:02 left gave UNO its final lead, 55-54, but a half minute later the Dragons' Jessica Fesenmaier reclaimed the lead for good for MSU. Dana Weibel knocked down a three-pointer with 2:42 left to pad the lead and fuel a 9-0 run that put the Dragons in command.
The Mavericks could creep no closer than four the rest of the way as the Dragons converted five free throws in the final 41 seconds.
Liz Klukas led MSU with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Jackie Doerr added 11 points and Weibel and Janna Davis each had 10.
Groslie, named to the All-Tournament team, was held to just two points the second half, but still led the Mavs with 13, while Skeeter Zoucha added 11 and JJ Smith 10. The Mavs, held to just 33.3 percent from the field, still managed to out-shoot the Dragons who were a chilly 29 percent on field goals, but were 28-for-43 from the free throw line.
