Mavs Fall to Creighton in Overtime, 72-66

Johnny Mathies and Tyler McKinney each hit four free throws in overtime Sunday to lift Creighton to a come-from-behind 72-66 exhibition basketball win over the Mavericks in front of 9,684 at the Qwest Center. The Mavericks, who led most of the game and by as many as 13 points the second half, were led by C.J. Martin's 11 points.
The Mavs led all the way the first half and took a 31-27 edge into intermission while holding the Bluejays to just seven field goals. UNO built that lead to 50-37 with 11 minutes left before Creighton began its comeback.
Kellen Miliner connected on three straight three-pointers to narrow the gap and Michael Lindemann gave CU its first lead, 58-56, with less than three minutes remaining.
After UNO reclaimed the lead on a basket by Martin and Tola Dada's 15-footer from the left side, Lindeman tied the game at 60 with a pair of free throws. The Mavs had the ball for the last shot in regulation, but couldn't score.
The Mavericks shot 40.6 percent and outscored CU from the field, 58-41, but the Bluejays compensated by connecting on 26 of 31 free shots.
Ty Graham and Arthur Boults each added eight points and Calvin Kapels and Randy Bland scored seven each. Ryan Curtis, Boults and Bland all had six rebounds for UNO. Graham led both teams with five assists.
The Mavericks will open regular season play Saturday, Nov. 15, at Winona State at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KOIL, 1180 am.
