Mavs Cruise Past Yale, 5-2

Denver, CO---Freshman forward Scott Parse tallied a goal and two assists as the Mavericks defeated Yale University 5-2 in the first round of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena on Saturday.
The victory over the Bulldogs snapped a five-game winless streak for the Mavericks and put UNO in the championship game of the Denver Cup against Denver University at 8:05 p.m. Sunday night.
"It was important to start off the second half like this," head coach Mike Kemp said. "We had to fight through a lot of adversity by killing off all of those power plays, but the guys responded well."
Yale's Jeff Hristovski gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 6:13 of the opening period on a power play goal that deflected off of goaltender Chris Holt's left arm and into the net.
The Mavericks knotted the score at 1-1 when Kaleb Betts recorded his third power play goal of the season. Scott Parse passed the puck from below the left circle and found a wide open Betts crashing from the right circle at 10:26 of the first period.
The Bulldogs recaptured the lead 1:22 into the second period when Joe Zappala's slapshot from the left circle trickled past Holt.
UNO evened the score at 2-2 when Brent Kisio scored at 7:49 of the second stanza. Parse fed Kisio from below the goal line on the right side of the net and Kisio flipped a backhander past Yale goaltender Josh Gartner from the slot.
The Mavs then took control of the game with a pair of goals with less than a minute to play in the second period for a 4-2 lead. Dan Hacker tapped in a rebound from the crease with 59 seconds remaining. Scott Parse then gave the Mavs a two-goal with 50 seconds later when he scored on the power play. Jason Krischuk faked a shot from the right blueline and passed to a wide open Parse streaking down the left wing, who then popped a wrist shot from the left circle.
Freshman defenseman Phil Angell extended the Maverick lead to 5-2 at 11:49 of the last period for his first goal of the season.
Senior goaltender Brian Haaland, who relieved starter Chris Holt with 11:24 remaining in the second period, earned his first win of the season and third of his career. Haaland made 17 saves. Holt finished the contest with seven saves.
UNO (5-11-3, 3-9-2 CCHA) will play in its second holiday tournament championship game in four years since capturing the SBC Shootout in Hunstville, Alabama in 2000.
